To be published at the end of 2018, the Seven Classics on War and Politics is a new edition of seven classic works of political and military science. These classics are already available in English, but in a format that is difficult to read and understand. Most of these are in English translations that are very old, or miss out on the fundamental insights. Many include a lot of excess commentary which is mostly unnecessary and unhelpful.

Volume Title Publication Status
Vol. 1 The Art of War by Sun Tzu published
Vol. 2 The Analects by Confucius published
Vol. 3 The Arthashastra by Chanakya (Kautilya) in press
Vol. 4 The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius coming soon
Vol. 5 The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli coming soon
Vol. 6 The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi coming soon
Vol. 7 The Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo coming soon

Our editing process reduces the repetition and unnecessary commentary and cruft, and clarify what is essential and insightful in the works using modern English prose. This process is an abridgement:

[C]ondensing or reduction of a book or other creative work into a shorter form while maintaining the unity of the source.

The goal of this project is to produce a collection of works with clear and modern English that showcases the timeless insights which these classics have within them. We also want to provide several different formats for these works, including:

  • Ebook
  • Paperback
  • Audiobook

The Collection - Seven Classics

This is an international collection, with two books from China, one from India, two from Europe, and two from Japan. The books also span over 2,000 years of history. Some of these books are focused on war and military science (Art of War, Book of Five Rings, Hagakure), others are more self-reflective and develop an ethical philosophy (Analects, Meditations), and others still are focused more on politics and ruling (Arthashastra, The Prince).

Each of these works provides a unique and historical perspective regarding these topics, and they complement each other in tracing deep insight into the nature of leadership, war, and politics.

Progress and Next Steps

The initial editing and proofreading have been made to these works, and what is needed is a final edit and layout and formatting of these for publishing the ebook and printed book, as well as production of the audiobook.

Final Steps and Word Count

A final copy-editing, and formatting is needed. This should take about a month. The audiobook will take another month. There is only a small risk in delay.

We estimate there will be about 400 pages on a standard formatted book, somewhere between 5" x 8" and 6" x 9", depending upon final size and weight considerations. Here are provisional, estimated wordcounts:

  • The Art of war, ~5,000 words
  • The Analects, ~10,000 words
  • Arthashastra, ~37,000 words
  • Meditations, ~29,000 words
  • The Prince, ~17,000 words
  • Book of Five Rings, ~10,000 words
  • Hagekure, ~7,000 words

Total, ~115,000 words

7 Classics on War and Politics was crowdfunded on Kickstarter.
